Learning more about industrial hearing loss and industrial disease

August 3rd, 2013 by Andreas Xavier in Uncategorized. Topics:

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reported that 75% of all civil claims that are related to occupational disease or industrial disease, are to do with noise.  Sadly, noise in the workplace is one of the most common industrial diseases around.  And, it can have a significant impact on your work and your life.

There are a hugh variety of jobs out there.  And all carry risks in some areas.  However, some jobs far outweigh the others in terms of the effect they can have on your health.  Industrial diseases such as industrial hearing loss can come from working in such places as:

  • Glass bottling lines
  • Milling operations
  • Working in a place where wrapping and bagging occurs
  • Places with chiller cabinets and freezers
  • Packaging plants

These kinds of jobs can mean that after a period of time your ears develop a sensitivity and the noises that you hear on a daily basis can really play havoc with your hearing.  It can lead to tinnitus (a constant buzzing, humming or even whooshing sound in your ear), temporary or permanent loss of hearing or missing out certain parts of conversations due to lack of hearing.

All of these symptoms not only affect your working life, but your down time too.  In fact, conditions such as tinnitus can affect you more when there is silence.  This is because the sounds that are happening in your ear become more noticeable when there is no background noise.

It is your employers responsibility to ensure that they do all they can to reduce the effects of potential industrial diseases, much like industrial hearing loss.

They can:

  • Assess your hearing on a regular basis
  • Provide you with protection such as ear plugs or ear muffs
  • Rotate your job so that you are not constantly exposed
  • Purchase machinery that limits the noise pollution
  • Obtain regular noise data from the machine manufacturers

Suffering from hearing loss is a noisy problem.  One that you should not have to deal with.  In order to get the compensation you deserve you should contact us at Priority Legal and we will file a claim on your behalf.  It is not your fault and you should not have to suffer in silence.  Shout if you need to, but your case needs to be heard.  And we will make it our job to shout as loud as we possibly can.
